Teat Scrubbers Improve the Tried-and-True Prep Routine

Since the introduction of teat scrubbers for pre dipping, it has become increasing difficult to ignore the benefits of adding a system into a parlor operation.  And by getting back to the basics of how a cow functions, we can see why this prep method is best for our cows.

The focus of why teat scrubbers are beneficial has been based mainly on how well they clean and disinfect teats.  However, the full benefits of a teat scrubber are seen when you consider how they capitalize on a cows’ physiology.

Better Stimulation Sends a Stronger Signal

Never forget that stimulation on the front side of any prep routine will always be key to harvesting milk completely.

The udder is not just a sack or bag of milk that we can manually pull milk out of during milking. Every time a cow steps into the parlor, we are asking her to give us her milk.

It takes the average cow 90 to 120 seconds from the initial contact time – ideally 8 to 10 seconds of stimulation – for the cow to signal its milking time and for her oxytocin to reach the alveoli in the udder, thus letting her naturally release her milk from the milk ducts.

To better leverage a milking cows’ physiology, proper contact time and stimulation on every cow at every milking is essential to ensure that optimal and comfortable milk let down.
