How to Win the Mycoplasma Bovis Battle

September 13, 2024Ensuring the utmost health of teat ends has always been a primary concern when discussing milking preparation routines. Traditionally, the manual wiping of teat ends during towel routines has been a staple practice, emphasizing the critical importance of maintaining teat end health for milk quality. However, the landscape is evolving with innovations like the FutureCow Teatscrubber’s bottom brush, revolutionizing this aspect of dairy hygiene.
The transition from manual wiping to automated scrubbing represents a significant advancement. The FutureCow Teatscrubber’s bottom brush now takes on the strenuous task previously handled by manual wiping. This shift doesn’t diminish the significance of physical touch in the cleaning process; rather, it enhances efficiency and effectiveness in ensuring proper teat end hygiene.
Critics occasionally raise concerns about the offset positioning of the bottom teat end brush in the FutureCow Teatscrubber. However, there’s a method to this apparent madness. Within the brush cover lies a plastic teat baffle designed to secure the teat in place. This setup ensures that as the slightly offset bottom brush cleans the teat end, it simultaneously presses the teat against the baffle, facilitating direct and thorough cleaning while also addressing any hyperkeratosis present.
The design traces back to 2014 when Kevin Dole, the visionary behind FutureCow, and myself during my tenure managing a large commercial dairy operation. Recognizing the limitations of existing teat scrubbers with centrally located bottom brushes, we sought to enhance the cleaning process. Observation revealed that the centralized brush often caused teats to fold over during rotation, missing the critical teat end entirely. This insight led to the redesign that has since become FutureCow standard, vastly improving teat end hygiene on dairy farms worldwide.
